Why Do Mothers Cry When The Young Folks Go to War?
By Winston Montgomery

Why do mothers cry
When the young folks go to war?
It?s what they?re put here for
To help protect the tribe
Cause they feel so young and strong
And they know they?ll never die
And they can?t believe that they could be so wrong

They grow with teeth and nails
And an instinct to survive
They?ll gnaw to stay alive
And they?ll claw to keep a mate
They?re careless with their pain
And reckless with their fate
When you knock them down they?ll spring right up again

In school they learn the pledge
And they must salute the flag
Never let their ardor sag
For the homeland?s cause is just
And the fair cling to the brave
And heroes don?t turn to dust
And once a year they place flowers on your grave

The politicians sit at home
With the generals on their laps
Move armies cross their maps
Like tin soldiers on a board
And though they lacked the nerve
To seek the glory in the gore
They aren?t ashamed to ask that others serve

And desperate to return
The wounded lie in wards
Re-sharpening their swords
So they can fight again
To avenge a comrade?s death
Or to cauterize their pain
For the hollow luck of taking another breath

Why do mothers cry
When the young folks go to war?
It?s what they?ve come here for
To help protect the tribe
Cause they feel so young and strong
And they know they?ll never die
And they can?t believe that they could be so wrong

And they can?t believe that they could be so wrong

And they can?t believe that they could be so wrong
